Sightseeing in Armenia
Welcome to Armenia – a Museum in the Open Air!
To study this museum you should choose Sightseeing in Armenia. There are few countries in the world where such a great number of historical and cultural monuments, about 25 000, are concentrated on such a small area, roughly 30 000 sq.km. Such a number of monuments are too many for a country with even a larger territory. And, please, add to the above mentioned the incredible natural beauty of the country: an alluring landscape with mountains, forests, waterfalls, and the second largest freshwater mountain lake in the world – Sevan!
Sightseeing in Armenia can’t be done without visiting the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, one of the oldest cities in the world. It was founded in 782 BC. In 2012 we are going to celebrate the 2794th anniversary of Yerevan. It is 29 years older than Rome, the eternal city! The half-ruined fortress built by king Argishti I in 782 BC is still standing in Yerevan. He constructed it to reinforce the northern borders of one of the powerful states of the ancient world – Urartu (Ararat).
During Sightseeing in Armenia one can see churches of early Christian period as Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD. The oldest among those churches is St. Echmiadzin built in 303.
Astounding is the number of the monuments dating from the Middle Ages - from the IX to the XIV centuries. These are fortresses, monasteries, churches, and khachkars – cross-stones. Among all Christian nations only Armenians have khachkars. There is a village on the shore of Lake Sevan, Noratus, where the largest depository of intricate khachkars can be found: about one thousand.
